This was the central theme of a recent webinar led by Prof. Joan Jan\u00e9, Dean of IESE Business School\u2019s New York Campus, co-hosted with the Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>Drawing from historical context, recent research, and current trends, Prof. Jan\u00e9 offered a compelling roadmap for companies seeking to understand and seize the opportunities emerging from this \u201crenaissance,\u201d through a more agile and tech-driven approach to manufacturing.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p><strong>Five Forces Driving Change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While trade policy and tariffs receive the most attention, Jan\u00e9 emphasized a broader transformation fueled by five interrelated factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Supply Chain Resilience<\/strong>: Businesses are moving from \u201cjust-in-time\u201d to \u201cjust-in-case\u201d strategies in response to global disruptions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Security<\/strong>: Strategic sectors like aerospace and semiconductors are reshoring to strengthen national capabilities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tariffs and Trade Policy<\/strong>: Recent trade tensions have reinforced the push toward regional sourcing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Global Labor Trends<\/strong>: Automation and wage convergence are shifting the cost-benefit equation of offshore manufacturing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technology &amp; Agile Manufacturing<\/strong>: Industry 4.0 tools are reducing the need for large capital investments. Modular systems, digital twins, and AI-enabled production are enabling pay-per-use models that increase flexibility and reduce downtime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jan\u00e9 highlighted agile manufacturing as a key enabler of this renaissance. As consumer expectations evolve and product life cycles shorten, companies must adapt quickly. Agile systems allow faster transitions between product variants, support customization, and offer access over ownership\u2014representing a \u201cthird way\u201d between making and buying: <em>\u201cMake it agile.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p><em><br><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>What It Means for Firms<\/strong><\/p><p><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Prof. Jan\u00e9, the U.S. manufacturing revival presents early-stage but significant opportunities for international firms\u2014particularly in sectors aligned with reshoring priorities\u2014as the momentum is not uniform across industries. He emphasized that sectors like pharmaceuticals and aerospace are seeing clearer movement due to national security and supply chain considerations, while others, such as textiles, face longer timelines due to entrenched offshore infrastructures.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>Companies operating in or supplying to priority sectors may find opportunities to align with U.S. manufacturers or policy-driven investment flows.
